Lightning

Contrary to the old saying, lightning can strike twice in the same place.

Be Prepared

  • Have a professional install lightning rods, a system tat protects your house from damage by strikes.

  • Use the flash-to-bang rule: Count the seconds between seeing lightning and hearing thunder, then divide by five to figure out how many miles away the storm is. If the lapsed time is less then 30 seconds, you should take cover immediately.

What To Do

Try to get indoors as soon as you hear thunder. Don’t use electrical appliances or telephones and turn off your televisions.

  • Ever take a shower or wash dishes in the sink during a storm, because metal pipes can conduct electricity.

  • If you’re outdoors and not near a building, take shelter in a hardtop car.

  • If there’s no shelter available, move to low-lying area, and stay at least 15 feet away from tall tress, fences, power lines, metal poles, bodies of water, and groups of people

  • Make yourself as small as possible if you’re in an open field by squatting down and placing your hands on your knees. Never lie down on the ground, because it’s an excellent conductor of electricity and will make your larger targe

Floods

What to do

  • If water is already entering your house, move to the higest floor or the roof

  • Know how to turn off all utilities, including gas dan electricity, in case  your’e told to do so.

  • Don’t try to swim to safety; wait for rescures.

  • If you’re on foot, don’t attempt to walk through a flooded area

  • In car, turn around and go back the way you came. It takes as little as six inches of water to sweep you away

  • Abandon your car if it stalls in water and move to higer ground

  • Before moving back into your home, have your utilities and foundation inspected. Don’t forget to check your house for snake and other animals
